The cleaning and painting of the gates, bollards and street signs at the Peppard Road entrance to Derby Road have now been completed.
Stage 2 of the work – repairs to the bricks, stonework, pier caps and pointing at the gates – will begin on 7 April.
However, following the cleaning of the bricks and stonework, the following extra issues were noted.
The hard cement surface pointing and repairs to this carried out in the past in many areas of Pier 1 is now failing, as it is not deep enough to form a good bond with the brickwork itself. Thankfully the quote sought by the DRFA allowed to carry out repointing to 50% of this pier and therefore this work will be covered as part of the quote.
There are also several small areas of repointing required to open joints that have now become evident after the cleaning. However, as a result of savings made elsewhere in the earlier work compared to the original quote, this extra work will also be covered as part of the quote.
One of the stone caps is showing signs of a fracture. The contractor has noted that looking from the ground, it is anticipated that this is not loose, but they have strongly advised that any open cracks are pointed up with a lime mortar to maintain the structural integrity for the future. Depending on the depth of the crack, it is estimated that this extra work will cost approximately £100 +VAT.
Peppard Road gates, railings, stone and brickwork, piers, pier caps, bollards, road signs
Following the refreshing of the road markings on Derby Road in late 2024, the DRFA has continued to adopt a proactive approach to the maintenance of the road and its infrastructure. As part of this, it has become clear that the Peppard Road gates (particularly the stone/brickwork) are in need of attention. The brick and stone work in particular is damaged/eroded in many places and so repairs are required now to prevent further deterioration and to avoid it becoming a safety hazard.
A letter has recently been sent to residents outlining the quotes sought and received for this work and seeking their approval for the work to be done. A copy of the letter can be found here
We appreciate this is not a small sum, but given the damage and wear to the stone and brickwork noted on this page, plus the fact that nothing has been spent on these for about a decade, the DRFA Committee believes it would now be prudent to do so to ensure their long-term sustainability and avoid more extensive and costly repairs being necessary in the future.
It is hoped that no additional repairs, not evident now, will be revealed after the cleaning of pier caps, brick and stonework. If this is the case, the Committee will update residents and businesses accordingly.
If you are eligible to vote, please take a moment to do so by email to [email protected] or by post to 31 Derby Road by 14 March and have your say in how the fund is spent.
This page contains some further information on the quotes and also photos of the gates and brickwork.

a. Replace missing brick at base (Qty 1)
b. Replace plinth cap bricks (Qty 2)
c. Take out and repoint 50% Pier (Qty 1)

Pier 3
Some erosion was noted to the top roll of the stone cap of Gate Pier 2 but the Committee is of the view that the indicative cost of £900 (exc VAT) for replacing this is prohibitive.
General Notes:
Replacement bricks will be sought either from local salvage companies or new and samples will be offered for approval. The new stone would likely be a Stoke Ground Base Bed Bath stone which we believe would be a good match.
All replacement mortar will be lime-based. Hard cement-based mortars have been used in recent repairs which have resulted in loose sections which are now easy to fall away and/or cause water damage behind. This is very evident on the first pier of the adjacent wall. Other hard cement areas that are still sound will need to be left in place as removal of these will cause damage to the bricks.
Some removal of mortar will need to be carried out with a grinder and therefore temporary closure of adjacent pedestrian access will be required due to dust etc.
Samples of brick and stone to be used and mortar will be carried out prior to the cleaning to save time.
